I am a connoisseur of life. I find it fascinating, absorbing and so so entertaining. Events and experiences around me seem to be part of the mysterious drama of life. There is a place for everything and a role for everyone. Naturally for me, even ordinary sights, people, events and encounters narrate a story of life. They make me reflective about the magic of life. Some of these experiences and reflections, I share them through my blogs.

Enter this world of mine, ENJOY!

what is in it for me, this "SELF-AWARENESS" stuff?

"What does it mean to be SELF-AWARE and can you tell me the benefits of reflecting deeply on oneself ?", a few days ago, a good friend, who has been following my writings on social media,  wanted to know. “After all, how to live a better life is the purpose of all knowledge, is it not?” he added.

The question is very valid and appropriate, I reckon. There has been so many hyped-up ideas about “self-awareness”, so much of branding and marketing by different schools and teachers, that has led many to believe that it is one of those “premium feel-good ideas” rather than anything practically useful.

I really cannot speak for other schools or “gurus”, but I'll share some of the insights I've discovered about self-awareness in my journey of life.

First, It reveals our origin and shows our true essence, removing any add-ons or social “make-up”.  It removes such add-ons and contaminations. self-awareness helps us know the “truth about myself-ourselves”. ..hence it is a “Cleaning agent” on our “dust-covered lenses” through which we look at life. Self-awareness gives us a CLEAR VIEW of who we are, and this is point number one.

Secondly, it filters out all other factors that happen in life, which we often mix up with our original truth. It's a filtering process, helping us see the difference between “temporary illusions”  and ongoing reality.

The third advantage is that we can eliminate reactions and reactivity coming from these add-on factors. We don't have to take them too seriously because they are temporary and contextual. This helps us respond better in different situations without carrying unnecessary expectations or burdens from the past. Big advantage of self-awareness: it helps us overcome unnecessary reactions.

The fourth benefit is working with clarity and balance in life. We all have multiple roles, and sometimes they get mixed up. For example, a government worker might justify corruption by thinking about their child's expensive education. But with self-awareness, we identify such  “mix-ups of roles and their pulls & and pushes”, and we can balance our life’s values with integrity.

The fifth point is that we feel more adequate and self-sufficient. We don't need material things or positions to feel good about ourselves. Being self-aware helps us by taking away such distractions, focus on important tasks and become better at executing them.

The next point is that we shed unnecessary burdens, making life lighter and easier. We can face challenges more peacefully and enjoy the journey. This takes away anxieties about the future, which is the seventh advantage.

The ultimate benefit is that Being self-aware shows me my true essence. I recognise that “I am” is equal to “my being present, continuous, and perfect”. That's why the letters I, N and G are added to the word "be”, making me a “BE-ING”, human being! I am myself, eternal, all-pervasive, and fulfilled. This truth enriches our lives, makes it “wholesome” and full-filled”.

In summary, self-awareness helps us understand our true selves, helps us to filter out distractions, and improves our responses to life's challenges. We will explore them further as we walk along this pathway…

Wishing you an awesome journey of self-discovery and awareness, my dear friends. Good luck and bye!
